Beautiful Native American Catawba tripod bowl/dish with two small handles

Catawba pottery is a traditional form of pottery made by the Catawba people, who are a federally recognized tribe based in South Carolina, USA. They are known for their distinctive pottery tradition, which has been practiced for centuries. Catawba pottery is typically handcrafted using clay sourced from the Catawba River region. One notable aspect of Catawba pottery is the use of a unique firing technique known as "smudge-firing." This involves covering the pottery with a layer of organic material, such as leaves or grass, before firing. As the pottery is fired, the organic material creates smoke patterns on the surface, resulting in distinctive markings and colors.
